Consumer Opinions: Meade DSI PRO II Deep Sky Imager Review

  • Author: admin

  • Date: Oct 20,2008

We’ve been asked for our opinion on the Meade DSI PRO III Deep Sky Imager. We feel that the PRO II is better value for money though so we’ll have a look that that ‘middle ground’ model.

Check out the Meade DSI PRO II at Telescopes.com

Let’s look at what Meade DSI PRO II owner’s have to say on the Web:

for the price, this is the easiest “introductory” camera I have used, and is definitely capable of imaging virtually all of the Messier catalog with an impressive effort-and-cost-to-results ratio…”
snippet from an expert-level reviewer at cloudynights.com

… The DSI is easy enough to make it relatively easy to use, but sophisticated enough to do a lot with and it’s the later that offers a lot of growth and potential challenges…”
snippet from an owner’s feedback at weasner.com

“… I purchased this a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it. I’ve finally been able to image deep sky objects. Even with short exposures, I get a reasonable amount of detail…”
snippet from a Meade Deep Sky Imager user’s review at telescopes.com

“… camera itself is sensitive and you can make quite good pictures of Deep-Sky objects and Moon, For planets it is not so good because of sensitivity but it can be made…”
part of a response to a query about the Meade DSI posted at answers.yahoo.com

Here’s what the manufaturer claims:

  • User-friendly for astrophotographers of all levels
  • World’s 1st un-cooled camera with low thermal noise
  • Take exposures for hours on end
  • Thermal monitoring sensors match dark frames
    to ambient temperatures
  • New zoom feature for easier focusing
  • Squared pixels for easier processing
The user-friendly astrophotography revolution continues with this model. It combines ease-of-use with a larger chip, greater sensitivity, higher resolution, and dramatically lower thermal noise. Meade engineers have invented a remarkable new way to reduce noise without a cooler. This means you can take exposures for hours at a time. And the new thermal monitoring sensors automatically match your dark frames to ambient temperature so it’s nearly impossible to take an uncalibrated picture. The software includes a new zoom feature for easier focusing and the squared pixels of the new larger chip make processing simpler and images more beautiful than ever. The DSI II is the world’s first un-cooled camera with low thermal noise. And that’s as cool as it gets.

  • Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope

We’ve favorably reviewed this bestselling beginner telescope before, but decided to get other owner’s impressions from all over the Web:

“… Overall, the Celestron Powerseeker 114 is a budget priced telescope with good optical performance, especially when using the low power K20 eyepiece…”
snippet of an AstroMaster 114 EQ owner’s review from washingtonpost.com

“Easy assembly right out of the box…1st view of the moon was awesome…sturdy tripod..everything seems to be built to last…”

    AstroMaster 114 EQ owner’s feedback at optcorp.com

“… Optical alignment seems as good now after shipment and backpacking as it can be, but there are all the usual adjustment screws for when needed… …suitable for an amateur astronomer…”
    114 EQ owner’s feedback at amazon.com

“… all in all, this in my opinion is the best bang for the buck telescope out there for beginners on a budget! “

    another owner’s review at amazon.com

“… Set it up in my livingroom, and had most of the basic operation figured out in less than an hour (attributed to reasonably clear instructions)…”
“.. noticed that the focus was real touchy, especially at 100x…”
“… but I had a good time staying fixed on my target at 100x, with only the fine RA adjustments. Getting used to both the delicate focuser, and the wobble. My touch is getting very light, especially on the slow adj. knobs…”

a series of reports from a beginner at the cloudynights forum

All in all, this is a great beginner’s scope. If you’re someone that likes to buy something more advanced then have a look at

Our last consumer opinion post was about Celestron’s NexStar 6 SE telescope. This post looks at actual owner’s feedback reports on its bigger brother the Celestron NexStar 8 SE.

Just to ensure that new readers understand the aim of these posts, here’s some background:

We obviously cannot review all optical instruments ourselves and we have therefore decided to collect opinions from consumers and post them in a single place for a single instrument. Real user accounts are excellent at cutting through the hype and marketing that traders use so well online to bamboozle consumers into making a purchase.

We feel that this strategy also counteracts our own biases and provides consumers with a more accurate idea of the quality and real world ease-of-use of the instruments we post here.

Just to be clear: these are not recommendations, but do provide a kind of ‘user opinion poll’.

OK, let’s have a closer look at the Celestron NexStar 8 SE:

Go to the NexStar 8 SE page t telescopes.com

    Owner’s opinions:

“… easy for me to align, and the GoTo really helps to find objects when viewing from my semi light-polluted back yard…  …Worth every penny…”

snippet of an owner’s feedback at telescopes.com

“… a great product, in fact the best scope I have ever owned… … eats double A batteries pretty quickly - You will need the power tank accessory…”

snippet of another owner’s feedback at telescopes.com

“… really loved everything about this telescope and the dislikes are trivial (and hence the 5 star rating)…”

snippet from an owner’s feedback at Amazon.com

“… Once I used SkyAlign to set it up, I was finding nebulas and galaxies that I had never seen before. 8 “AA” batteries do not last long in this scope, so if you plan to use it for hours at a time, I would suggest that you purchase the AC Adapter, Car Adapter, or Power Tank to go with it…”

    another owner’s feedback at Amazon.com

“… There are two streetlights fairly nearby, the first about 80 feet away and the second roughly 100 feet away. In spite of that, I have been able to see objects I never expected I would be able to see, even given these less than ideal viewing conditions… … a magnificent instrument for visual observation. Its expansive 8″ aperture, high quality optics, and nearly flawless, easy to use, GoTo and tracking systems, make it a joy to use…”

snippet from an expert user’s review at cloudynights.com

  • Thusfar we’ve had some great responses to our new strategy of gathering independent reviews from all over the Internet to assist enthusiasts with their buying decisions. So it looks like we’ll keep doing it then.

To new readers, here’s the background to these ‘opinion/review’ posts:

“… Optical quality is excellent, the tripod is rock solid, and the sky align technology can’t be beat. Also, the quality of the included eyepiece is really nice…”

snippet of an owner’s opinion comment at hawkee.com

“… there are bigger scopes out there but the prices and size of these telescopes make this one a great compromise on size, performance and “bang for the buck…”

Consumer Opinions: Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium

This eliminates our own biases and therefore provides consumers with a more accurate idea of the quality and ease of use of the instruments we post here.

    Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium

Celestron’s SkyScout was designed to be a break through point-and-click handheld device that uses advanced GPS technology to identify stars, planets, constellations, etc. While obviously useful to the beginner astronomer, it’s ease of use should make it useful to more advanced hobbyists as well - enabling more viewing and less searching for things to view.

    That’s the theory.

Let’s see what actual users have to say:

Celestron CGE 1400 Schmidt-Cassegrain with StarBright XLT Coatings

The CGE 1400 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is one of Celestron’s high-end instruments. The scope allegedly enables viewing of Messier Catalog, NGC, IC and Caldwell objects when in manual mode. Celestron claims that when used in Fastar configuration for f/2 CCD imaging, the the CGE 1400 can display the faint detail of a telescope twice its aperture used visually.

    Actual consumer feedback

” … an excellent observatory instrument… …for 5 years I used a telescope that I had to manually align objects on, so this scope is a quantum leap forward…  …its the first time I had ever seen the planets Uranus and Neptune!. Just go to “planets” on the hand controller, scroll through the list of available planets for that locality, day and time and…bingo!!.”

Portion of actual user comment on binoculars.com

The C14 is such a terrific scope and the CGE is a great mount for it for the visual thing”

Portion of a comment on the cloudynights.com forum

“If you see an object that interests you, you can press the “Enter” button, and the CGE will slew to that object! I ADORE this function! I can scour a single constellation and see just about everything in it that I think is within reach of my aperture and never have to look at a map or chart!”

    Portion of a CGE 1400 owner’s comment on astromart.com

“The fit and finish are excellent. The optics are first class. The views are eye-popping. Clear and bright with fine contrast. Able to resolve globular star clusters to show tremendous detail and structure. Nebula look like the photos, with their shapes very evident. The brighter galaxies show structure.”
